Greece's banking sector has undergone significant reform and recapitalisation since the financial crisis. The four major Greek banks — National Bank of Greece, Eurobank, Alpha Bank, and Piraeus Bank — are well-capitalised and operating normally.

The Banking Sector

A Reformed Financial System

Greece's banking sector has been transformed since the crisis years. Non-performing loans have been reduced significantly, capital ratios have improved, and the banks are once again lending to businesses and individuals.

Opening a Greek bank account is straightforward for EU citizens and relatively simple for non-EU nationals with a Greek tax number (AFM). Most major banks offer English-language services.
