Ancient Architecture
The architecture of ancient Greece — the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders — has been the foundation of Western architecture for 2,500 years. The Parthenon, the Temple of Hephaestus, the Theatre of Epidaurus: these buildings represent the highest achievement of human architectural thought.
Greece has more than 100 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and protected archaeological areas — a density of cultural heritage unmatched anywhere in the world.
Contemporary Architecture
Contemporary Greek architecture is finding its voice — drawing on the country's extraordinary heritage while engaging with the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, designed by Renzo Piano, is the most significant new building in Athens in a generation.
A new generation of Greek architects is working internationally, bringing a distinctly Mediterranean sensibility to projects around the world.
