International Access
Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) is Greece's primary international gateway, with direct connections to over 60 countries. Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Rhodes, Corfu, and Mykonos also receive significant international traffic, particularly during the summer season.
Major European carriers including Aegean Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, and KLM operate year-round services. Budget carriers such as easyJet, Ryanair, and Wizz Air dramatically expand connectivity from April through October, opening routes to smaller regional airports across the islands.
From North America, direct services operate from New York (JFK) and Philadelphia to Athens, with connecting services available via most major European hubs. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad offer convenient connections from the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.
The Ferry Network
Greece's ferry network is one of the great logistical achievements of the Mediterranean — connecting over 100 inhabited islands to the mainland and to each other. The port of Piraeus, just outside Athens, is the busiest passenger port in Europe and the hub of the entire network.
High-speed catamarans connect the Cyclades in as little as two hours from Piraeus. Conventional ferries offer overnight crossings to Crete, Rhodes, and the Dodecanese — a romantic and practical way to travel, with comfortable cabins and deck space for watching the Aegean at dawn.
The Ionian Islands are served from Patras and Igoumenitsa on the western mainland. The North Aegean islands — Lesbos, Chios, Samos — connect through Piraeus and Kavala. Booking in advance is strongly recommended for July and August crossings.
